Before We Begin

When should we bring an architect into the process?

Before you buy the land, if possible. Site constraints - topography, shoreline setbacks, solar orientation, agricultural zoning - shape what you can actually build, and they don't get cheaper to discover mid-design. A feasibility conversation costs very little. Finding out your dream tasting room requires a conditional use permit after you've started schematic design costs considerably more.

What should we bring to a first conversation?

A realistic sense of your budget, a general understanding of what you're trying to build, and ideally some sense of what's driving the project. Inspiration images are fine, but telling us what frustrates you about your current home - or where your existing hospitality space loses money - is more useful. We're trying to understand the problem before we start proposing solutions.

How long does this take?

Longer than most clients expect, and almost always because of the county rather than the design. Shoreline permits in the Pacific Northwest, conditional use reviews in Walla Walla wine country, and historic commission approvals in New England each add meaningful time to the front end of a project. We build that into our schedules from day one and front-load our permitting documentation to keep things moving - but we'll always be honest with you about what's realistic.

What does full-service architecture actually include?

Everything from the first sketch to watching the last coat of finish go on. Concept design, design development, construction documents, permitting, bidding, and construction administration - we stay involved through the whole arc. If you want us to stop at a certain phase, we can structure it that way, but our best projects tend to be the ones where we see it through.

Do you work on projects outside your listed regions?

Yes. We've worked in Montana, Texas, Oregon, California, DC, and Tennessee, among other places. If the project is interesting and the client is serious, geography is a logistics problem, not a dealbreaker.
